Overwatch not triggering? Check the action, not just the cone.

A placed Overwatch cone does not promise a shot. The enemy must move through or act inside the selected area; if that condition appears to be met repeatedly, you may be seeing a launch-build issue rather than a rules misunderstanding.

Direct answer

Overwatch should make an automatic attack when an enemy moves through or acts inside the targeted area. It immediately ends that Operator’s turn. If no enemy crosses or acts in the cone, no shot is expected; if one clearly does and the weapon still stays silent, repeat a controlled test before treating it as a possible bug.

What the official Overwatch rules require

EA Help describes Overwatch as an end-of-turn action aimed at a selected area. It can interrupt enemy movement when the automatic attack hits. EA’s gameplay overview adds that the cone is adjustable: investing AP affects how many enemies the Operator can fire on, while cone length affects hit chance.

Official fact

Movement can trigger it

An enemy moving through the selected area is a valid trigger opportunity.

Official fact

An action can trigger it

An enemy acting while inside the selected area can also provoke the automatic attack.

Official fact

Placement ends the turn

The Operator cannot take another action after committing to Overwatch.

A safe Overwatch troubleshooting checklist

  1. Confirm where the enemy was when it acted. The trigger depends on the selected area, not merely whether the enemy is visible somewhere on screen.
  2. Distinguish movement from standing still. An enemy that never moves must perform an action inside the cone to create the other documented trigger.
  3. Test a clear, short lane. Use an unobstructed area and a single obvious enemy path. This is an editorial diagnostic step, not an official fix.
  4. Repeat the same setup once. A controlled repeat helps separate a misunderstood boundary from inconsistent behavior.
  5. Record the build and platform. If the condition is visibly met again, capture a short clip and note mission, Operator, weapon, platform, and game version for a useful report.
Do not diagnose from the cone aloneEnemy behavior during its turn is the important evidence. A screenshot of placement proves intent; a clip showing the enemy crossing or acting inside it proves the trigger condition.

Is Overwatch bugged?

Possibly, but not confirmed here. Player reports create a real troubleshooting demand, yet EA’s public common-issues page did not list an Overwatch-specific known issue when reviewed. That absence does not prove the mechanic is bug-free, and a community report does not prove every missed shot shares one cause.

Confirmed The official movement/action triggers and end-of-turn cost.

Observed Players report cases where they believe the trigger condition was met.

Unknown A universal cause, affected platforms, and an official permanent fix.

What to do if the controlled test still fails

Preserve the evidence, restart from a safe save if practical, and check EA’s current support notices before changing campaign strategy around the problem. This page does not invent a cache reset, save edit, or platform-specific fix without first-party support.

Sources and evidence note

Evidence boundary: official mechanics are stated as facts. Diagnostic steps are conservative editorial tests. Bug cause and fix remain unknown until EA documents them or reproducible build evidence establishes them.
